Dominica continued their reign in the semi finals
25 September 2010,Road Town, Tortola, British Virgin Islands.-
After a dominating win over Grenada, Dominica continued their
reign in the semi finals against Antigua. The attacking skill
of Dominica's big man, #10 David Toussaint proved too much for
the Antiguans although they put up a valiant battle. Dominica
took the first two sets 25 – 22 and 25 – 22.
The Antiguans came back in the third set determined to stop the
Dominican powerhouse and won that set 23 – 25. The Dominican
fans were armed with horns and noise makers and helped carry
them home in the fourth set with a score of 25 – 23.
Manager of Team Dominica, Robert Guiste was satisfied with his
team's performance. "We are looking forward to playing whomever
we meet in the finals and will use tonight's game to observe any
errors and work towards improving for the big finals" he said.
Antiguan coach Orson James graciously expressed his
congratulations to the Dominican team for making it to the
finals. He commented that his team played a very timid game.
There were lapses in their concentration and the players did not
stick to the game plan. According to James, "We were weak in
blocking and floor defence which contributed to our downfall.
We are now playing for third place and hope that tomorrow we can
capture that position".
Dominica will face the winner of the second semi-final match
between St Kitts and St Lucia.
The second semi final match between St Lucia and St Kitts, had
everyone on the edge of their seats. St Lucia had a good first
set with some fantastic plays by their big hitters, Jason Octave
and Joseph Clercent. The second set was just as thrilling with
both teams battling hard to maintain a lead. The St Kitts team
was all fired up after a player and coach were issued yellow
cards by the referee, but the fire could not last against the St
Lucian team who remained calm and focused. St Lucia won in
three sets 25 – 20, 25 – 22 and 25 – 19.
Charlery, head coach of the St Lucia team thought that it was so
far the best match of the tournament. "Congratulations to St
Kitts for a keenly fought battle. They put up a good fight and
wanted this win badly but we wanted it more. We will now
prepare for Dominica and come out and fight like we St Lucians
can."
Glenn Quinlan, head coach of the St Kitts team had this to say -
"I thought we played well in the first and second sets and the
first half of the third set. Lack of a substantive bench hurt us
in the end especially with one of our premier blockers out of
commission due to a concussion suffered in an earlier match. In
the end I thought our reception was a significant key in out
downfall as we felt the pressure from the St Lucian servers.
Not to take anything away from them as they demonstrated
excellent ball handling skills and power and were the better
team tonight."
In Sunday night's final round Antigua will meet St. Kitts for
the bronze medal and St Lucia and Dominica will got to battle
for the gold.
